How to Use and Set Up Duck Decoys

People have been hunting ducks with the aid of duck decoys for several hundred years. Decoys are an essential part of fooling the ducks to fly into shooting range. However, unless you have the experience and knowledge, you need to know how to set them up and use them properly.

Some people may think that the same old duck decoy spread will work in different locations, at all times of the year, but this is not the case. You need to find out what works in certain hunting spots at certain times of the year. If you don’t have experience on the hunting ground, ask someone familiar with hunting the area. This will give you valuable advice on which you should follow.

Over time, the design, materials, construction, and craftsmanship of duck decoys have changed. Original decoys were made of wood, now they are made of wood, cork, foam, and plastic. However, the concept of duck decoys has changed very little. The hunters place the decoy out in a body of water in an attempt to lure the ducks in closer. This basic principle has been used by hunters to help them take ducks for food to their families and villages.

]]>

Remember, the size of your decoy set matters. When you are duck hunting in large, open bodies of water, such as lakes, a large number of decoy sets is the best option. However, if you are hunting in a smaller body of water, such as a creek or stream, try to use a smaller number of duck decoys. You want your decoy sets to look natural. Ducks are smart, and they can easily spot danger from an unnatural decoy set.

If you plan on hunting geese, experienced hunters will tell you to set a larger number of decoys earlier in the year, and a smaller number later in the year. This is good advice to follow, because geese usually follow this behavior during the year.

This might seem like common sense to some people, but remember, the more duck decoys you purchase, the more expensive it is and the more you have to carry around. Trust me, it can get heavy carrying around dozens of heavy-weighted decoys. It’s a good idea to try to find light decoys which can easily be carried.

If you are hunting from shore, it’s a good idea to set most of your decoys upwind from your hunting blind. This allows the ducks to fly past your blind, only seeing the decoys instead of an eager hunter waiting on them.

It is also important to use decoys which resemble the species of bird you are hunting. If you are hunting mallard ducks, use mallard decoys. If you don’t have a specific decoy, then use one that looks similar in size and color. Remember, fowl are smarter than you may think. They can spot color differences and unnatural number variations. Another thing you want to be careful of is the shine from your decoy. Some duck decoys have a shiny reflective surface which can reflect the sunlight and alert nearby ducks.

Duck hunting is a fun sport, and when you throw in duck decoys you add another element of excitement. I hope this article gives you a better understanding on setting up and using duck decoys.

Fly Fishing Gear- Top 10 Essentials For Fly Fishing

With an apparently unending array of gear and gadgets, fly fishing seems to be a varied and interesting sport. Most of the available options could be confusing to anyone who is new to Fly fishing. Anyone with a flair for fishing should know the important accessories about it. The 10 common pieces concerning fly fishing gear include a reel, fly fishing rod, line, files, leader, waders, net, clippers, vest and sunglasses.

Fly fishing rod

This rod is one of the mandatory equipments for fly fishing. These rods are usually different when compared to regular and conventional fishing rods and are designed in unique manner. It would allow casting the fly and fly line. Rods today are often constructed using types of graphite compounds. Many of the rods are still structured from bamboo or fiberglass. The Fly rods are usually categorized based upon weights of line they are structured to be used with.

Reels

The Fly fishing reels essentially, are less significant than the rods. Unlike conventional fishing, along with fly fishing one does not reel in the fish. The Fly fishing methods involve stripping the line with free hand. Quite many fly fishing reels actually are of primitive designs and hence not so very expensive. Anglers commonly “palm” the reel for creating the drag, than relying upon internal drag mechanisms within the reel.

Line

The Fly fishing line has been specially designed for such style of fishing. Fly fishing line is considerably heavy compared to traditional fishing line. It is often tapered and designed for floating. Some lines are designed to sink, though. Some anglers attach backer line in between fly fishing line and reel so as to increase the line available.

]]>

Leader

The leader is a monofilament, clear line which attaches to the extreme end of fly fishing line. Additionally, the fly is tied to the leader at the end. This leader is further tapered down into a narrow diameter towards the forward end. Leader matches more with the traditional fishing line.

The Flies

They are available in huge assortments of designs and styles. The dry flies are designed so that they float up in the water, nymphs and wet flies are structured for submerging, and few other flies are made to partially submerge. Flies could also be implied as attractive or imitative. Imitative flies are deliberated to imitate or manifest like a specific insect. On the other hand, attractive flies are structured to attract the fists not looking towards any specific natural food source.

The Waders

Waders are optional when you fish in warm water. But a few anglers go fly fishing in cold water streams to find waders enormously essential. Some popular wader styles currently include waders with waterproof lining and neoprene waders. Neoprene waders work very well in the cold water stream and serve in keeping the angler warm. The waders having a waterproof lining prove to be convenient and breathable when one goes hiking flanking a stream.

Net

A net is essential equipment for fly fishing. As fly fishing is often done standing in the waters, it could be not very easy to hunt a fish without good nets. Nets always have a hook attached. This would help the net so that it could be hooked on the anglers’ vest or waders. A net is particularly important in cases when the angler is trying to catch and release fishing.

Fishing Vest

As fly fishing is always tried in the water, a fishing vest seems to be a near-essential equipment piece. Vests would allow you in keeping essential gear and tools handy and neat as and when you find its necessity.

Clippers

Clippers are quite useful for clipping the line when you change the flies. You would rarely notice any fly fisherman with no clippers in their pocket or vest.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are pieces of personal gear which you would never want to forget. They would keep the sun to not reach your eyes and also protect them from stray fishing hooks. Polarized and good quality sunglasses would also assist in a better vision while you are out near the stream. Most anglers would also append a sunscreen and a hat to the catalog of personal gear which is essential.

There are other pieces of gadgets and gear which are available for every fly fisherman. The above mentioned ten items are perhaps among the most essential ones required for a successful and fun outing.

The Hunter’s Best Friend: a Gundog

When it comes to the sport of hunting – the gundog is definitely a hunter’s best friend.  Gundogs have been used to assist man since the days when survival crucially depended on hunting skills, not only for food to eat, but for clothing and shelter provided by the hides of the hunted animals and to this day bird dogs still play an important role in hunting for sport.

Originally bred with the intention of assisting game bird hunting, the characteristics of gundogs have, over the years, been strengthened by further breeding with animals already displaying the necessary traits for hunting. Gundogs (also known as hunting dogs or bird dogs) are intelligent, active and alert breeds, easily trained for a variety of sporting uses such as hunting game birds and waterfowl, showing the hunter where the game birds are
located, startling the birds into the open for the hunter and retrieving the shot or injured birds and taking them back to the hunter. These hunting dogs love being around humans, and they require a great deal of attention and strenuous exercise.  Some hunting dogs are used specifically to work in water, some only on land, whilst others are capable of working in both of these environments.

]]>

Gundogs can be divided into three categories, the retriever, the pointer and setter, and the flusher dog and listed below are the roles played by each of these types of dog.

The Retriever Dog

Ideally equipped with their water-repellant coat and webbed feet, the Retriever, as its name would suggest, will find the bird and take it back to the hunter.  The Retriever is particularly suited to work in water. Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Irish Water Spaniels are popular breeds for the Retriever category.

The Pointer and Setter Dogs

These two types of dogs are used where game is distributed over a wide area, for example on moors.  They operate quite a distance away from their handlers and upon locating the game birds will wait for the hunter to get close enough to shoot.  In order to let the hunter know they have located the game, and without actually causing any disturbance which may alert the game, the dog will remain still and rigid, in effect pointing in the direction of the game.  When the hunter arrives on the scene, he will command the dog to flush the game, thus presenting his sporting target.  Once shot, the dog will be expected to retrieve the game and deliver it to the hunter. English and Irish setters and English Pointers are the main breeds in this category.

The Flusher Dog

The flusher will not actually capture his prey but will creep around the undergrowth to hunt and then when he has found his quarry he will crouch in front, in a guarding manner, so there is little or no chance of escape, allowing the hunter to take his quarry. Examples of dog breeds in this category are Springer Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels and Field Spaniels.

Useful Tips on Deer Hunting

A number of people find it thrilling to engage in deer hunting as a part time activity. This means that they are most active at dusk and at dawn and sleep in the middle of the night and also around midday. However, it is quite possible for you to find deer feeding right in the middle of the day too.

To be a successful deer hunter, you should take time to scout before you actually plan the real deer hunting expedition. The best time to go scouting is the period from early to late summer. You should make an effort to be as quiet as possible and it is very important that you do not leave behind any scent. With the help of hunting outfitters, you should identify the specific type of food that the deer will be feeding on during the particular hunting season. It is advisable for you to keep an eye out for trees that tend to possess the most acorns. Why Do Waterfowlers Love Cork Duck Decoys?

During the season we duck hunt every day. Not every few days or on weekends, but every day one or more of the “Pawlet Duck Club” is on the water somewhere in our little valley, tossing decoys into the river. This year, “setting the dekes” became one of the most pleasurable parts of the hunt as we all upgraded to new cork decoys that are certainly the finest production cork decoys ever built. Our little river now hosts a resplendent flotilla of magnificent decoys that would draw any duck out of the sky. And when the ducks aren’t flying, they’re simply wonderful to look at.

Just putting these decoys in the water is worth the price as these are heirloom quality decoys with construction and paint features beyond anything any of us had been privy to. From the designs of Cameron McIntyre, one of the premier decoy carvers and restorers in the country, each decoy is made in the same step-by-step process McIntyre uses in the carving of his wooden decoys.

What makes it a bit humorous is that Vermont is not exactly a hotbed of waterfowl hunting, at least where we live. There are only eight of us in the club (four of which are dogs) and generally fewer ducks than members. But we love it for more reasons than just the hunting. Divide the value of our hunting equipment by the annual duck harvest and these are quite possibly the most expensive ducks in North America, but that only adds to the irony and the humor of the endeavor.

]]>

The few misguided ducks that do come our way, we have come to the conclusion, are either lost or anti-social, but for us it is an autumn ritual that means much more to us than the simple harvesting of ducks. Given the annual take, it’s a good thing as it is as much about the simple pleasure of good conversation, good coffee and spectacular sunrises as it is anything else. Dropping a work of the carver’s art in the river on a cold morning is a big part of it. And then there are the dogs.

Our dogs have grown up together, have probably taught each other more about retrieving than any wisdom us poor humans could impart. And they revel in each other’s company. Every morning while we drink coffee in Tom’s kitchen, they tear around the house in delightful anticipation of the morning’s hunt, a cacophony of wet noses and otter tails slamming against the cabinets. While they play, we finish our coffee, gather our guns and decoys and prepare to set out for the river.

These are super-magnum sized decoys with extraordinary realism. The cork diffuses the light and gives them a realistic look that no plastic or composite can possibly equal. The construction is rock solid and the paint work on these birds is as detailed as any paint you will see on the most expensive decorative decoys and they are using McIntyre’s exact paint formulas for perfect color.

The heads are carved in high head and low head configurations and the tails are reinforced with wooden inserts for durability. The heavy wooden keels are substantial and these decoys ride the water with the substance of real birds. Out of curiosity we compared these to other corks on the market and the competition is not even close.

“Heirloom quality” is a term often used, but seldom in this day and age does the object stand up to scrutiny. In this case, there is no doubt from the moment you hold one of these birds in your hand. There are those who would buy these decoys for the mantel.

Understandably so, for they are truly works of art, but when these are handed down to our sons and daughters they will be treasured, not only as classic works of the carver’s hand, but as the decoys that Dad shot over back in the heyday of the old ‘Pawlet Duck Club.’
